PHIL MAYNARD MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND
As a Leadership Akron Life Trustee, Phil helped to establish our endowment fund, co-founded the NEXT Program, and provided wisdom to many Signature classes during the “Leadership Perspectives” session of the Opening Retreat. We wanted to find an appropriate way to honor Phil’s generous spirit and his commitment to Leadership Akron. We think Phil would be pleased to have his name associated with this opportunity to make our programs more accessible to all.
All funds will go directly towards program tuition payments, according to need.
ABOUT BEN CURTIS, Winner of the British Open
Ben Curtis shocked the world in 2003, winning the British Open by defying 300-1 odds (or by defeating some of the top competitors in the world in his first major). He was the only player to finish under par that week with a score of 283.
Growing up in Ostrander, Ohio he learned to love the game of golf by playing on his grandparents’ golf course Mill Creek, which the family continues to operate today. He graduated from Buckeye Valley in 1996 and went on to play for the renowned coach Herb Page at Kent State University.
During his time at Kent, he was a 3 time All-American, who won the Ohio Amateur in 1999 and 2000. He was a semi-finalist in the US Amateur and competed on the World Am team. He graduated in 2000 and turned professional.
In 2003, Ben earned his PGA Tour card through Q-School. After winning the British Open in 2003 he went on to win twice in 2006, The 84 Lumber Classic and The Booze Allen Classic. He was a member of the 2008 Ryder Cup Team, bringing victory to the United States ending the streak of three successive victories for Europe. His last win was in 2012, The Valero Texas Open in San Antonio where he carried the lead for all four days.
Ben is now retired from playing professional golf and is teaching kids the game of golf at The Ben Curtis Golf Academy in Hudson, Ohio. He also coaches his son’s high school team at Kent Roosevelt. He and his wife Candace started The Ben Curtis Family Foundation in 2013 to fight food insecurity for local children in northeast Ohio. They have two children and reside in their hometown of Kent.
