Dan Rice Recognized as the Recipient of 2023 Read Family Difference Maker Award

Leadership Akron is proud to announce that Dan Rice, a pivotal figure in the development of the Ohio & Erie Canalway National Heritage Area and Towpath Trail, and an invaluable contributor to Leadership Akron, has been recognized as the recipient of the 2023 Read Family Difference Maker Award (RFDMA).

Dan's remarkable achievements will be celebrated at the RFDM Award Event on the evening of September 27th at The Trailhead at Cascade Lofts. We invite you to join us for this grand occasion, as we honor a legacy of leadership and community commitment.

Dan Rice has been a transformative leader since 1994, building over 150 community partnerships to develop and enhance the Ohio & Erie Canalway National Heritage Area and Towpath Trail. With his strategic vision and relentless dedication, Dan has aided countless organizations in areas such as organizational development, public/private partnership building, fundraising strategies, management plans, and government relations.

As a proud member of Leadership Akron’s Signature Class 15, a Diversity on Board Coach, and a key Subject Matter Expert, Dan's influence has been felt throughout Leadership Akron's programs. He has taken active roles in the planning committee for Leadership Akron’s Parks, Recreation & Environment days, and he routinely hosts Leadership Akron programming at the Richard Howe House. His passion extends to offering canoe trips for out-of-class program experiences and leading immersive tours of the Ohio Erie Canal.

His commitment to the Akron community and its heritage is evident in his numerous board and committee engagements, including the Ohio Historic Site Preservation Committee and Development Finance Authority of Summit County. His educational background boasts a bachelor’s degree in history from the College of Wooster and a master’s degree in American history from The University of Akron.

"Dan Rice's commitment to preserving and enhancing our community's historical and natural resources, while championing diversity, equity, and inclusion, is nothing short of commendable," says Justin Everett Hilton, President & CEO of Leadership Akron. "His work through the Ohio & Erie Canalway Coalition (OECC) and commitment to ensuring accessibility and equity in our parks, trails, and open spaces truly embodies the spirit of the Read Family Difference Maker Award."

The Ohio & Erie Canalway Coalition plays a pivotal role in preserving and promoting the historical, natural, and recreational assets of the Ohio & Erie Canalway National Heritage Area. Under Dan's leadership, the coalition has been at the forefront of establishing partnerships and initiatives that cater to the needs of the local community, while also focusing on equity, diversity, and inclusivity.

In alignment with the tradition of the award, a new tree will be planted at Cascade Locks Park in honor of Dan Rice, further commemorating his commitment and service to the Akron community. Leadership Akron extends heartfelt gratitude to all organizations and individuals who continue to support and maintain the site for the Read Family Difference Maker Award.
