Diversity on Board

Diversity on Board, presented in collaboration with United Way of Summit County, provides leadership development, education and board matching services to advance racial/ethnic minority representation on nonprofit and public boards. Over the course of the program, participants gain valuable knowledge on all aspects of board governance and leadership, receive personalized coaching from established leaders within the nonprofit and public sectors, and engage in board shadowing, community service and networking opportunities with many of the leading organizations throughout Summit County.

Long-Term Goal

Create a critical mass of minority leaders that are prepared, motivated, and connected to serve on boards.

Short-Term Goal

Within one year, graduates will serve on a board or committee in one or more area nonprofit/public organizations.

For 10 years, United Way of Summit County administered Project Blueprint, a program model that a number of United Way chapters provide to advance minority representation on nonprofit boards. In 2014, United Way of Summit County requested Leadership Akron to use its prototyping process for new programs/projects to re-imagine Project Blueprint. Using this framework, Leadership Akron and United Way re-designed the program as Diversity on Board. The goal remains the same: develop more diverse talent for service on nonprofit and public Board of Directors through a program of leadership development, education and service.
