Melissa Gerney is the Superintendent of Detention for the Summit County Juvenile Court. She joined the court in 2012 as the Operational Development/Policy Writer for the Detention Facility with the task of creating and updating facility policy to apply for Accreditation with the American Correctional Association. The Detention Facility successfully achieved initial accreditation in October 2014 and reaccreditation in May 2018. During that time, Melissa was promoted to Assistant Superintendent in 2015 and to Superintendent in 2016. As Superintendent, Melissa is responsible for implementation and policy development for the facility, oversight of the daily operations of the facility, and supervision of approximately 40 employees.
Prior to joining Summit County Juvenile Court, Melissa worked for 10 years in the criminal justice private non-profit sector as a coordinator of adult residential and non-residential community corrections and substance use and abuse treatment facilities. Melissa is an active member of the American Correctional Association.
Melissa has a bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice from Kent State University. She is married to Blake Gerney and has three children, Quinn, Haley and Avery.
